DAY 3 - Semis, Finals and Worthy Winners! Some heavy legs (and even heavier heads thanks to our Dover, Isle of Wight and Yorkshire friends) at the start of day three, but this didn’t detract from the quality of the action at hand. With everyone back to Priory for the remaining matches it was another full on day and with all the titles being decided the courts were packed out from 9am - 4pm. Let’s breakdown the categories and find out what went down… Over 80s: Our oldest competitor in the event - Andrew Rugg Gunn of Devon managed incredibly to defend his O80s draw title, taking out several players up to 7 years his junior in doing so. Bob Shelley finishing runner up in his first year in the age group having had a great 3/1 match in the final. It was brilliant to hear Andrew get the loudest cheer at the presentations, a really lovely guy and someone who we should all aspire to copy at that age! O75s: This came down to a three way finals group between Ian Graham, Graham Greensall and Richard Lowe. Greensall doing very well to beat Lowe 12/10 in the 5th in a marathon match to take second place, both however losing out to Graham, who has been incredibly consistent in this category over the years. Again the quality of movement and shot play at this age is really great to see and all three guys are excellent poster boys for the game. O70s: Shocks galore! With 2nd seed John Herbetko toppled on the Saturday, unseeded Phil Alexander then managed to take down ⅝ seed Steve Pearcey 3/2 in the semi final, before then backing up AGAIN to beat Graham Holmes in the Final! In his first ever UK Racketball National Championships! What a fantastic effort this was, basically the most difficult path through the draw possible, very much earning his maiden title. Kudos to Holmes for taking down last year’s Champion and leading Series O70s player Mitchell in an all Devon 3/2 semi final earlier in the day too! Women’s O65s: Another upset result! Jan Hazell Hunt managed to overturn last year’s loss to be able to beat reigning Champion Lesley Sturgess in a controlled and clinical 3/0 victory. This backed up with wins against Sue Moore and Melody Ripley gave the Devon player her first ever National title! Men’s O65s: Top seed (and sponsor via his Play Squash57 Youtube Channel) John Cordeaux showed his class by stomping through the draw to his first O65s title without dropping a game all weekend. Mike Phillips putting up a good fight in the final, but he was no match for the classy Norfolk lefty. Could this be the start of a new reign of terror in the category? Women’s O60s: Another dominant force comes to the fore here. Nicky Horn of Harrogate Yorkshire (one of our new Satellite venues this year,) took the title again without dropping a game! It was great to have a full 8 draw in this age group and a lovely bunch of players involved. Cornwall’s Siobhan Garland doing her best in the final but Nicky proving too clinical throughout, taking her first O60s Nationals title! Men’s O60s: Another draw that came with it’s share of surprises was the O60s, where top seed Patrick Osborn was taken down 3/1 by the Welsh ¾ seed Richard Murphy in the semi final! Murphy then going on to back up very well in the final by beating Nick Billington 3/0 to lift his first ever National Racketball title! Could this be the start of a new power in this always highly competitive and strong category? Osborn needs a challenger with Cordeaux moving up an age group, back to the drawing board for him! With Murphy certain to represent Wales in September’s Home Internationals it will be interesting to see the outcome of the rematch! Women’s O55s: Local club member Tina Wotherspoon played really well on home turf, managing to battle her way through to second place, losing out only to top seed Kim Brook of Devon. The two had a great seesaw match, Tina going 2/1 up in games before Brook fought through to take the win 11/4 in the 5th game. What a brilliant match between the two and I am sure Tina will be very keen to get a rematch in same time next year for revenge! Men’s O55s: Here we saw both top seeds toppled in the semi finals on the Saturday, Andy Murray & John Simpson getting past Phil Hall & Chris Wase with 3/1 wins. This left the two England Masters Squash buddies to duke it out against each other reasonably ‘’fresh’’ on Sunday. The first two games going to a tie break 1/1. Simpson then however being too solid for Murray, forcing the attacking lefty into errors through the next two, giving the Yorkshireman the 3/1 win and the title in his first Nationals appearance! Kudos to Murray however for reaching this stage despite a knee replacement last year! Women’s O50s: Another quality 8 draw here was really great to see, and a wide spread of entries from Yorkshire, to Devon and Wales! In the end it came down to two of our most consistent competitors this year, Linda Pritchard vs Karen Bealey in the final. Karen having an absolutely brutal game vs Diane Fenwick in the semi final winning 3/1 - 10-12,11-9,9-11,10-12 (in comparison to Linda’s clinical 3/0 victory vs Jo Perriam,) ended up getting to the end of the day with nothing left in the tank. (Having also played the B Grade through to the final too!) So despite having been beaten in their last meeting, Linda took the win 3/0 and the 50s title! Men’s O50s: This was always going to be one of the hardest fought categories over the weekend, and it certainly didn’t hold back! Saturday night saw a great upset win with Andy Speake taking out #2 seed Jon Davies 3/2 from 2/0 down. (And some serious fist pumps afterwards!) When it came to the semis and finals stage though, the seeds reasserted themselves, with event sponsor and top seed Mat Lowery seeing off Chris Morris (last year’s finalist,) and ¾ seed Mark Davis taking down an understandably leggy Speake 3/0. In a final which showcased two quality movers and accurate ball placement, both players worked each other really hard. Covering all areas of the court with great variety of pace and angles. In the end, Lowery’s control broke down the harder hitting Davis, giving him his first title at this age category! Will he be able to repeat at the Europeans in October? Men’s O45s: This group of players always seems to have one stand out name to beat. Ryan Loska. Can anyone not only battle through the rest to face him, but also can they do enough to take him out too? This year Adam Giles came close, but not close enough… The Wiltshire Warrior managed to recover well from his 3/2 battle with Paul Norton the previous evening and pushed the Shropshire top seed hard, losing out in a really high quality 3/1 final. Giles later admitting he started off too passively and needed to attack more from the start. You let Mr Loska squeeze you in the first game or two and then you are always in trouble… So yet another title for one of the UK Racketball communities most consistent and relentless performers, a very admirable effort! (8 National titles across the age groups and counting!) Women’s O40s: A new champion! In her first British Nationals event Yorkshire’s Marie Elcock put in a clinical performance, winning all 4 of her group games 3/0 to take her first every Racketball title! A fantastic effort considering she had some tough battles in the B Grade too. Kudos and commiserations to local player Tina Wotherspoon who finished runner up in her second event of the weekend! “Always the bridesmaid” she remarked at the presentations… #justiceforTina Men’s O40s: Wow we had some battles here. The top four seeds all came into the event with every right to expect a chance of winning it, all with serious Racketball pedigree. Both semi finals provided us with some excellent games and upset wins, with both ¾ seeds overcoming their higher ranked opponents. Kent’s Zeb Young beat last year’s champion Alexis Smith from Dorset, impressively managing to overcome a two deficit to take the win in a marathon five game 75 minute + match. In the bottom half of the draw, Daniel Soar returned to Nationals action after a few years out, taking on Yorkshire’s Mike Tolman, who has had plenty of success at this event in the past. The tall Cambridgeshire Player showcased his full array of racket ability and speed, taking the win in a very entertaining 3/1 battle. On Sunday he then continued this rich vein of form, not giving Young any chance to get a foothold in the final, coming through with a 3/0 win! Fully deserved, and if he can stay fit, he will be a real tough one to beat in this category going forwards. (European Cup in October?!) O35s: We unfortunately lost our second and third seeds in the few days leading up to this event, leaving already odds on favourite for the title Ted Jeal looking even more the top dog! Ted being one of the most skilful and clever players on the UK Racketball circuit is a handful for any of the top players in the Series, and he showed his class by coming through to win his first ever National title without dropping a game. Second place was taken by the Isle of Wight’s Callum Arnott, who fully deserved his spot having done very well to beat third place Ben Bryant in a quality Sunday morning showdown. Both players are regulars on the series and great guys to have in the mix. Juniors: It was fantastic to have another 8 player draw for the Junior competition, with a mix of ages from 12 years old to 18! The more we can get Junior players seeing the benefit and fun in playing Racketball alongside their Squash training, the more we can help the game grow, so please do encourage players at your Club to give it a try! This had to be one of the strongest Junior draws we have had for a very long time, with the likes of England under 13 number one Daniel Stevenson in the draw alongside top 10 in the country ranked under 17 and under 19 players. Two days of great matches led to a final between Louis Vinten from Cornwall, and Aaron Suthi from Priory. The local lad proving too good for Vinten, taking the title in a tight 3/0 victory. Congratulations Aaron and we hope to see you back next year! Women’s B Grade:: Each year this event grows and grows, this time round with us having a full 16 draw of players which is absolutely brilliant to see. The semi-finals came down to four of our more experienced Series campaigners: In the top half Diane Fenwick beating Wales is Rhian Davies in the semi-final, and in the bottom half Karen Bealey winning a marathon match against Marie Elcock, Diane’s Yorkshire teammate! In the final, Diane managed to overcome her earlier in the day over 50s draw loss to Karen by winning the match 3/0, Karen (by that point having also having played her over 50s final,) admittedly a bit dead on her feet, but still threw everything at it, and we shouldn’t detract from Diane’s win. It was great to see more new faces in their first ever Nationals in this draw, let’s hope we can keep the positive influx of players going in the coming years! Women’s A Grade: As this was a box of five, all players were still in action on the Sunday. Two however came into the day with a definite chance of winning the title, Jasmin Kalar and Amber Marshall having overcome their opponents on Saturday and being the only ones with 100% records. It all came down to the final match Sunday afternoon between the two of them, Jasmin starting really well to take the first game 11/9, the first time she has done so against top seed Marshall! After that however it was one-way traffic, with Amber showing why she is now the six time Champion, using her full array of skills and hitting power to flip things and take the win 3/1. Great to see such a competitive and very fairly fought final, both players will be in England action alongside each other in September! Men’s A/B/C Grade: The grades were now fully separated by the time we get to Sunday morning, with the semifinals and the finals of each being played out on the day. In the C Grade, Thomas Simpson from Yorkshire managed to emulate his father‘s success in the over 55s, by taking out Ireland’s Dan Long in the final 3/0. Dan trying to put up a good fight, but at the end of a long weekend and having had several hard five set matches, had nothing left in the tank. Despite the fact he had also played the Junior event, Thomas was definitely looking far fresher and sharper by the time of the match on Sunday afternoon! In the B Grade, it was an all Guernsey showdown! With team mates and travel buddies Leo Ware and Toby Young throwing down for the title. Both players having really tough semifinals to get through earlier in the day, so it was very much a case of who could back it up best in the afternoon! Despite losing the first game, Toby managed to get his body going and see off Leo 3/1 for his first Racketball Nationals title! Both players very well supported by the rest of the Guernsey crew, who are a great bunch and we love having them over! Finally in the A Grade, it came down to the top two seeds fighting out in the very last match of the event. Mike Harris versus Ted Jeal, a fixture that has now happened three separate times in British Nationals finals! Both players were pushed well in their respective semifinals, Calli Smith taking a game off Ted to lose 3/1, and Guernsey’s Janick Radford impressively managing to back up his brutal quarter-final the night before, by pushing Mike quite hard, but losing out 3/0 in a high quality game. After a long weekend for both players, the final started out a bit scrappy, neither being able to find much rhythm initially. Jeal using his hitting ability to break up the patterns of play and not allow Harris to settle into his length hitting. However as it progressed, Harris manned to find his lines and get moving better, and while Jeal hit some impressive winners from all areas of the court (and going 10/7 up in both the 1st & 3rd games), the reigning champion came through to retain his title 3/0 once again. 9 in a row now for the Devon boy, just one off of the all time record holder Tim Vail! Sunday Fun Doubles:
Last but not least, it’s always worth it mentioning our now traditional and always entertaining Sunday morning fun doubles event! This in its third year is proving to be a really popular addition to the event, with it being a chance for either people to help relieve themselves of a bit of a hangover, or also get a few more entertaining games of Racketball in if they have already been knocked out out of the competition. This year, the entries played out perfectly so that we had a mixed draw and a men’s draw, with four pairs in each. The mixed draw being very sociable and full of laughs, and being won by Michelle Meadows and Pete Cossey. The men’s draw (inevitably) getting slightly more competitive than first thought, was won by the Dover duo of John Waller and Tom Henson! All four players happily walking away with a big box of Burts crisps as a reward for their efforts! It was lovely to have a full crowd for the last finals and also the presentations, thanks to everyone who stayed around for it, it always makes a big difference! A massive thank you to our amazing event sponsors for their incredible backing of the competition. Everything they contributed went into making it the best possible tournament for everyone involved, whether it was in the gift bags, the high quality tournament shirts, or the prizes. It all makes a huge difference to what we can give everyone so thank you all very much. Thanks also to Edgbaston Priory and Sutton Coldfield for hosting us so well. Two great clubs and we are lucky to have their support in hosting this event as it continues to grow. The next big one is the European Cup on the 2nd - 4th October at Hallamshire & Fulwood Clubs in Sheffield! Entry is still open for all categories so don’t miss out on what will be an amazing event with players from all over Europe getting involved: https://www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/The-British-Racketball-Open-2nd3rd4th-October-Hallamshire-Fulwood-Squash-Clubs Hope to see loads of you at a UK Racketball event soon!

AFTER A FANTASIC WEEKEND AT EDGBASTON PRIORY AND SUTTON COLDFIELD SQUASH CLUBS LET'S TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THE ACTION... DAY 1 & 2 FIRST UP... DAY 1 - Traffic Chaos, Sorting Stash, First Round Fun: We kickstarted the Nationals in the worst way possible with the M5 causing the Southern travellers (including half of the organising team) a load of issues. 2+ hours of standing on the motorway in 29 degree heat is not the way you want to start the biggest weekend in the UK Racketball calendar! Luckily however Ant & Tim were there in plenty of time, alongside Kirn Dibra from Priory, and they worked hard to get everything sorted in Mike & Tessa’s absence, and ready for the first matches at 4pm! The Talbots sponsored gift bags were packed, shirts laid out and sorted and the balls all teed up and ready to roll! Lots of the draws had first round games on the day and it was great to see our series friends arriving excited to get started. Despite the traffic issues, we managed to get everything done on time with some creative court management and some thankfully patient players. There were some brilliant matches first up, Karl Bushby vs Alex Rowlands, Linda Pritchard vs Beth Fisher in the Men’s & Women’s Opens, and Lee Scott vs Simon Inskip, Nev Buckle vs Carl Elsby in the Men’s 50s all being thrilling 5 game battles. Bushby overcoming a 2 game deficit to take down Wales’ Rowlands and Pritchard doing incredibly well to come through 14/12 in the 5th vs Fisher. Kudos to Scott, who earlier in the evening had taken down Scotland’s Ian Prott in a tough 4 game win, only to have to take on Inskip 30 mins later. Eventually succumbing 11/6 in the 5th, a broken man! Perils of playing two draws… All in all a very successful first day, and it was great to be able to have a beer with the early arrivals and sponsors once the matches were done! DAY 2 - Two Clubs, Full Throttle Schedule, Brutal Evening Battles:
Nationals day two is always the toughest, with every single participant in the event having between one to three matches (more so if they were playing two draws!) With both Priory and also Sutton Coldfield being used, we had 12 courts across the two venues in full action from 9am onwards (with Priory finishing at 9pm!) With so many games across the day (over 200+) the action came thick and fast. It was especially great to see draws like the Women’s B Grade and the Juniors in play, with lots of new UK RB faces involved and lots of smiles and fun along the way. Our youngest player of the event was 12 years old and our oldest at 87 years young, a truly great indicator of how accessible Racketball is across all age ranges. We did face a couple of challenges across the day, firstly with the dual club set up, with (despite numerous reminders) some players forgetting which clubs they were at, or even that we were using a second venue! (One in particular for the second year in a row… No names mentioned…) Another issue was the lure of the Priory facilities, with a recuperating Lee Scott having to be dragged from his tanning bed by the pool to play an afternoon match, and Jack Bennett from in the pool to play his last game of the day. I guess we can’t argue too much, it is a great club! (Let’s also not forget the amount of players having to be pulled away from nursing well earned pints to continue their respective Nationals quests!) However despite all this, the day went really well, with us all but finishing on schedule as planned. The only sticking points were a few absolutely brilliant quarter and semi final matches in the late afternoon / evening. First up being the O55s, with both the 1 & 2 seeds being taken down by their ¾ seeded opposition. Chris Wase to John Simpson, and defending Champion Phil Hall to Andy Murray. Both high quality 3/1 encounters. In the O45s semi we had longtime buddies Adam Giles & Paul Norton throwing down to see who would take on top seed Ryan Loska in Sunday’s final. It looked clear cut to start with Giles racing to a 2/0 lead, but the crafty Norton is never to be counted out, and he played some quality attacking Racketball to drag it back to a 5th. However the effort of doing this meant he couldn’t push through that final game, Giles taking it 11/6 and a deserved spot in the Sunday showdown. It was the last two matches of the day that were probably the two longest and most brutal of the whole event. The Men’s A Grade quarter finals between Guernsey’s Janick Radford & Liverpool’s Matty Powell, and then Wiltshire’s Calli Smith vs Leicestershire’s Elliot Smith. Both matches went the full distance, 11/9 in the 5th game to Janick and Calli, overturning their 5th seeded opposition in matches that lasted over 90 minutes. Unbelievable efforts from both of their opponents, leaving absolutely everything on court (with Matty saying the next day he was quite glad he wouldn’t have to play the semi final!) A brilliant ending to a crazy busy day, the Edgbaston Priory bar taps were certainly kept working hard well into the evening rehydrating our thirsty players... We come to our third and final British National Championships event preview covering the Junior, Men’s and Women’s Open draws! Juniors - Reigning Champ - Dylan Kalar. First up it’s really positive to have eight players in the Junior event, this is a category that we are really keen to keep growing year on year and we would love to be in a position to offer separate boys and girls draws in 2027. So if you are reading this and have some handy Junior players at your club that might fancy a change of scene from Squash for a weekend, get them involved next time! Last year‘s winner, Dylan Kalar is away, leaving the previous runner up Lewis Vinten with a great shot at the title. However, in the other half of the draw we have the likes of Stourbridge's Jack Bennett and EPC's Aaron Suthi, both of whom are no strangers to the event and who have been improving year on year. It is by no means a clean path to the title... With some other great young players spread across the two boxes of four, whoever makes it through to the final will have had to work hard to get there, and we could see some really exciting new talent coming through from this! Women’s B Grade - Reigning Champ - Karen Bealey. This is one of our favourite draws to watch play out at the event, as it brings together a big mix of players of all ages and experience. Many of them playing in their first major tournament and it’s really positive to see it growing to a full 16 draw for this year. Last year‘s champion Bealey returns, but she will have stiff competition with a number of the entrants proving themselves across the UK Racketball series over the last 12 months. It’s especially great to see some of our Guernsey Racketball friends coming across to take part in this one, they are a great sociable bunch and a sure sign of the continued growth of the game over in the Channel Isles. Women’s A Grade - Reigning Champ - Amber Marshall. Amber is back one more as top seed looking to add yet another Nationals title to her cabinet. She has England Women’s Captain Jasmin Kalar to get past on route, plus the likes of the returning to the scene Roxy Keshavarz, Series regular Linda Pritchard, and Stourbridge coach Bethany Fisher (doubling up with the Junior draw too) on the way through. Should be some great games across the group of 5 over the weekend! Men’s ABC Grade - Reigning A Grade Champ - Mike Harris, B Grade Champ - Nick Lathbury, C Grade Champ - Dan Colbeck. Harris is back once again looking to try and stay at the top of the tree for a 9th year. This time his challengers are Ted Jeal, doubling up for the first time, last year’s semi finalist Calli Smith, Guernsey’s #1 Janick Radford and Liverpool’s Matty Powell. We also have plenty of extra depth to the draw along the way, with regular Series players like Elliott Smith, Callum Arnott and top Junior Lewis Vinten. Danny Berkley, Alex Rowlands and Damian Burgess are also bringing some Welsh flavour to the line up too. With another packed out 32 draw it will be interesting to see how the matches play out and it divides out into the final A / B / C categories as we progress. Lots up for grabs in terms of Road to England selection points for 2027 too, so some important battles to be had! Straight away from RD 1 we have some tasty clashes and it is really positive to see the overall level of this draw grown each year. So there we have it! Our Nationals preview for 2026. Just one week to go until the action is fully under way and we can’t wait to see how it all plays out. A huge thank you to our amazing event sponsors for all they have provided to support the event, whether it be in funding, prizes or goodies for the player gift bags, it’s all massively appreciated. See you all at Edgbaston and Sutton Coldfield very soon! We return to the action and take a look at the next batch of age categories, kicking things off with the Women's O55s draw!
Draws here: www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/The-British-National-Racketball-Championships-2026 Women's O55s - Reigning Champ - Siobhan Garland. Cornwall's Garland has now moved up to the O60s draw so leaves it open for a new category winner! Last year's finalist Kim Brook looks to be in with a good shot, but local legend Tina Wotherspoon will be calling on home support to hopefully see her to a title! O55's - Reigning Champ - David Evans. Last year this category provided us with two unbelievably high quality semi finals, with both going to 5 brutal games. Champion David Evans is unfortunately absent this year with an injury, and with Nick Billington (last year's runner up) having moved up into the O60s it creates a power vacuum in the draw. We have a very punchy line up of top seeds however, with all four players very capable of battling their way through to a win. Chris Wase, Phil Hall, Andy Murray and John Simpson are all looking in good form, we could see a repeat of last year's mammoth showdowns! Last man standing... Women's O50s - Reigning Champ - Sam Mueller. Sam is absent this year, but we have a great line up of 8 quality players battling it out instead! Two of our current top Series regulars - Linda Pritchard and Karen Bealey will be looking to renew their rivalry by meeting in the Final, but Yorkshire's Diane Fenwick and Devon's Jo Perriam will both have something to say about that, having both come very close to taking the title themselves last year. O50s - Reigning Champ - Jon Davies. The Welsh wizard returns to defend his title after battling past Chris Morris in a tough and entertaining final last year. Morris also returns in the top half of the draw, where he is seeded to meet top seed Mat Lowery who has just come up from the 45s. This age group has always provided us with some of the closest match ups possible and this year is no exception. We also have the likes of Mark Davis, Nick Staunton, current Series leader Andy Speake, and Steve Smith all also in the mix for the title. No easy matches in this one next weekend! O45s - Reigning Champ - Ryan Loska. Mr Relentless is back once more, ready and raring to sap the legs and minds of anyone ready to try and go up against him! He faces regular sparring partners Knocker Norton, Adam Giles and Barry Talbot in his quest to regain top spot. And the guys certainly have their work cut out against one of the most consistent Racketball players we have had ever in the Series! Norton and Giles have however registered wins against him in the past so you never quite know... Women's O40s - Reigning Champ - Natalie Lawrence. Another increased draw size which is really great to see. With Lawrence absent it is very much an open line up, with all players capable of battling through to take the win. Yorkshire's Marie Elcock looks to be the slight favourite on paper, but Priory club members Kirn Dibra and Tina Wotherspoon on home turf will see what they can do to upset the odds! O40s - Reigning Champ - Alexis Smith. What. A. Line Up! We only have 8 players in this draw but it is one hell of a group of them. Last year's finalists Alexis Smith & Mike Tolman who battled each other to a standstil return as top seeds, joing this year by Zeb Young and Dan Soar, both of whom are very capable of causing problems in the semis. Plus two Welsh warriors in Ross Cassley and Damian Burgess who won't be going to make up the numbers! Whoever comes through this by Sunday night will very much have earned their title! O35s - Reigning Champ - Jason Pike. We have a very punchy draw of 9 for this category, with several players in the mix to do some damage. With the draw format offering up three berths in the finals stage, with all three finalists having to play off against each other, whoever can come through the group stages unscathed with energy to spare will have a great shout. Ted Jeal comes in as top seed, searching for his first National title, but county mate Billy Jones will be looking to double up from his British Open 2025 title last year! Last year's semi finalists Duncan Moselhi is also out for revenge after a tight loss to Jones previously... They will have some very tough group stage games though, with the likes of Arnott, Bryant, Vasey and more all out to upset the standings. So many quality draws and tough battles to come through! This time next week the action will all start to unfold. We can't wait... Part 3 (third and final) of the preview to come very soon... Stay tuned! In the lead up to next weekend's 2026 British Racketball National Championships lets take a look at the contenders, previous winners and what could play out across the draws! First up we investigate our O80s - O60s age group categories...
All draws here: www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/The-British-National-Racketball-Championships-2026 - O80S: Reigning Champ - Andrew Rugg Gunn. Andrew returns again at the fantastic age of 87 to try and retain his Nationals title. It has been phenomenal to watch him in action and let's see if he can continue to amaze with his court coverage. He will be hard pushed this year though, with a bumper draw of 7 players - our largest in this category to date - to contend with. Notables are recently aged up Bob Shelley, Howard Thompson and Andrew's Devon compatriot Pete Hamblett, all who have National age group titles to their names. With 3 or 4 best of 5 game matches for the players over the weekend, the winner will certainly have earned it! - O75s: Reigning Champ - Ian Graham. Last year's winner Ian returns again in a bid to retain his title for a second year. His 2025 final opponent Graham Greensall is back from injury and keen to hit the ground running on local turf. 2025 British Open runner up Richard Firmin is also in the mix in the third group so we could see an interesting Finals box of three if all make it throigh reasonably unscathed! - O70s: Reigning Champ - Andy Mitchell. This is always one of the more evenly balanced categories in the Series, and although Andy returns as top seed, there is no guarantee he will be sat at the top of the pile at the end of Sunday 19th. John Herbetko at 2 seed has proved regularly able to upset the apple cart and sneak wins off of Mitchell, with the 3/4 seeds of Graham Holmes and Paul Loska also with National Championship and Series wins to their names. With some extra dark horses such as Wallington, Pearcey and Hudson Oldnall in the mix too, the tops seeds are going to have to hit the ground running! - Women's O65s: Reigning Champ - Lesley Sturgess. Lesley returns once again as the bane of anyone trying to squeeze a National title under her belt. She has been remarkably consistent across her age group categories over the years and carries a wealth of experience of success at this level. It is great to see a group of 4 in this age group, and the likes of Sue Moore, Jan Hazell Hunt (last year's runner up in a very tight battle with Lesley) and Melody Ripley will all be locked in in their attempts to topple this legend of the Women's game. - O65s: Reigning Champ - Chris Davey. Davey is absent this year so it does open up the draw for a whole host of contenders. However, his loss has meant the arrival into the age group of John Cordeaux, one of the O60s regular top dogs, and he is very much the one to try to beat. The languid lefty (host and creator of the fantastic Play Squash57 Youtube Channel) has serious pedigree at this level, and previous Champions Mike Phillips (2 seed) and Collis Sheik (3/4 seed) will have their work cut out to take him down. It is a cery competitive line up across the draw however with several of the lower seeded players having reached the semi finals stage of majors in the past. So no easy games for anyone! - Women's O60s: Reigning Champ - Lesley Sturgess. Sturgess has stuck to her O65 guns, and in so leaves a great draw of 8 players to battle it out to take their inaugral O60s National title. Nicky Horn from Yorks is back in Majors action and looks to be the odds on favourite for the win, but Lesley's old sparring partner Siobhan Garland at 2 seed will have a few tricks up her sleeve we are sure. Again it is really positive to have an 8 player draw in this category, a sign that the Women's game is picking up impetus! - O60s: Reigning Champs - John Cordeaux. With John having moved on up to the O65s, it is his old battle partner (and regular Doubles buddy) Patrick osborn who once again sits as top seed in this draw. Patrick being one of the the most consistent players in the scene across the Series and Major events makes him somewhat of an immovable object at the top of the order. However with Neil Baldwin also bringing a huge amount of skill and quality at 2 seed, plus the recently aged up Nick Billington and Welsh Wizard Richard Murphy at 3/4 seeds, the UK Racketball legend definitely won't have it all his own way. The likes of Jim Muirhead, Martin Greenslade and John Rycroft also sit at the lower end of the seedings, all very capable of doing damage. This is definitely going to be one of the standout draws of the event! We will bring you Part 2 over the next few days, but as you can see there is loads to get excited about next weekend! A huge thank you to all of our amazing event sponsors for their contribution to this pinnacle of the UK Racketball scene, it should be a brilliant weekend and your backing makes it all possible! |
