Can't wait to catch you all at an event very soon! On a very hot and sunny Saturday 9th August, UK Racketball headed east to Bexley tennis and Squash Club for the latest edition of the London Racketball Open. One of the longest running tournaments in the Series, Bexley is always a lovely venue to run an event out of with a really welcoming local community.
It was another busy day of matches, games starting at 9am and running through until 7pm with all five courts being in action at the club. While we had a vast majority of players being series regulars, it was lovely to have some new faces involved, particularly in the Ladies event where Tommy Meadows Dover Racketball Ladies were really well represented! A great showcase of the hard work he has put in there and we hope to see them back in event in the near future. With a few of the top Series ranking singles and doubles leaders away for this one, it was a chance for others to steal a march on them, or boost their ranking hopes as we move into the second half of the 2025 series. In the over 70s we had a national championship final rematch between Andy Mitchell and John Herbetko, Mitchell once again having the edge over his Dorset opponent and taking the win. With his recent addition to the age group he is looking like already being one to watch for the foreseeable future at the top end of the game! After a few ins and out in the over 60s draw in the two weeks prior to the event, Patrick Osborn as always stayed solid throughout, adding another title to his hefty series tally. Kudos to the back from injury and operation table Chris Burton, who managed to get past local legend Mark Banfield to reach the final on his return to series action! Another very strong over 50 draw featured: - both over 55 national championships finalists, - one over 55 national championship semi-finalist - one over 50 national championship finalist - and one over 50 national championship semi-finalist! (Amongst the rest of a strong draw too!) Not a bad lineup for a series event! In the end, it was the over 50s duo that battled through to the final, with the very last match of the day going in Steve Smith’s favour, taking out Chris Morris in a quality final game. Smith moving to within just a couple of points of the top of the Series singles rankings under Ryan Loska with this result! Unusually, we only had two players entered in the over 40s draw with many of the usual suspects being away. Paul Norton seized the opportunity to get some vital series and road to selection ranking points under his belt, taking out good friend and everyone everyone’s much loved Dorset regular, Nick Jenkins in an entertaining 2/1 win It was a busy B Grade this time round with a full 16 draw and a great mix of standards. This was probably our most competitive draw on the day with some really tough battles from match one, players getting stuck in very well in the heat of the day. Tristan Vasey did very well to capture his first series B Grade title, fighting his way past Sam Jeal in a very hard contested semi-final before then taking out the ever consistent James Dean in a tight 2/1 final win as well. Dean also being pushed all the way through his draw by the likes of Tyler, Moore and Tinnams in his lead up to the final. As mentioned, the Ladies was well subscribed with four new faces joining Ali Billington and Michelle Meadows in the lineup. And it was great to see Ali capturing her first ever Ladies series title with a really great final win against Gloria Riley from Dover Squash Racketball club. Congratulations to Gloria for reaching the final in her first ever event. Hope to see you at more in the future! A well balanced A Grade draw featured a mixture of local players and travelling series regulars. There were a few upsets along the way, with both finalists arguably seeded at the middle of the draws prior to the event. Paul Norton doing really well to get past Billy Jones in on his way to the final, and Ben Bryant overcoming the likes of Amber Marshall and Craig Lloyd on his route through. In the end it was a titanic battle, with the final game going back and forth with both players having match balls. In the end Bryant pulling out of fantastic final rally of retrievals with a clinical finish to take his first ever series win! Finally, the Doubles as always provided us with some really entertaining exchanges and creative shot play. Osborne and Harris in particular having a brilliant game against Sam Jill and Billy Jones, the former winning a really free-flowing and exciting match 2/1 to win through to the final. There they faced two of the most consistent and successful players in the category, Paul Norton and Steve Smith. Both of whom sit at the top end of the doubles series rankings to date. That class showed through with the right and left hand combination winning a very tight 2/0 final with some brilliant hitting and retrievals. Therefore giving Smith his first ever Series doubles title and also the singles and doubles double win for the day! That win extends Norton’s holds at the top of the 2025 Doubles rankings, with the likes of Smith, Chappell and Loska all a little ways behind now. But with the two doubles Major Championship events coming in the British Open and the National Doubles, there is still a ways to go in that ranking list yet. So another great day of series action, huge thanks to Bexley for hosting us so wonderfully again, we always love playing at the club with a top set of courts and great atmosphere. We look forward to being back there next year.
