We headed back to Sheffield and Hallamshire & Fulwood Squash Clubs for the 5th iteration of the British Racketball Open on the 3/4/5th October! With the largest and most cosmopolitan entry to date, we knew we would have an exciting weekend ahead of us, but this tournament surpassed even those expectations... There were a whole host of upset wins, brilliant battles, and entertaining exchanges across all the draws, with the spread once again being from Men's & Women's Open A/B/C Grades, through to O75s. Plus the additional Open, O50, O60 and Mixed Doubles draws. A massive weekend of Racketball action! The full results from the weekend can be found on Sporty HQ here: https://www.sportyhq.com/tournament/view/The-British-Racketball-Open-3rd4th5th-October-Hallamshire And don't forget that the new Squash57 Levels system is up and running with every single UK Racketball event result being added in as we go. So check out your global rating and how your results have impacted it here: https://app.squash57levels.com/dashboard Here's a few of the matches and results that took our eye over the course of the weekend... STANDOUT PERFORMER AWARD: Diane Fenwick - Women's B Grade & O50s Winner! Diane had a fantastic event, taking the titles in both of the events she played in. Winning all 6 of her matches 3/0 across the two days! A relatively new face in the Series set up, it was a brilliant effort and well deserved for such a great character. It was a great match vs Helen Rees in the B Grade Final in particular, with some excellent court coverage from both players. BIGGEST UPSET AWARD: Andy Mitchell - Men's O70s Winner. Andy has exploded on to the O70s category this year, taking the National Championship title earlier in July and generally being a menace to the rest of the (already very strong) category across our Series events. However his one stumbling block has been Ian Graham, the O75 National Champion and Mr Consistent in the category, who in his own words: ''Few people know, but my loss yesterday was the first at Racketball, one month short of 6 years in all the UK RB comps. It also broke a winning streak of 12 successive Squash and Racketball tournaments numbering 46 victories since I hit 75 last November'' So Andy's very tight 3/1 win on Sunday afternoon was a brilliant effort to take down Ian who has so long been the standout force at the top of the game. Needless to say, Ian will definitely be back plotting revenge, but for now Mr Mitchell can sit very happily with both National and Open O70s titles under his belt for 2025. MOST EXCITING MATCH AWARD: Men's Open Semi Final - Henrik Mustonen vs James Bowden. This was an absolutely brilliant battle between two players with contrasting styles. Mustonen the Finnish 3/4 seed (still currently a PSA Pro Player) looking to move the ball around the court in economical fashion, using lots of soft angles and mixing up his paces. Bowden the current O45 European Squash Champion on the other hand constantly looking to press with high pace and hunting the ball, looking to rush his younger opponent. Bowden had already taken out one of the pre tournament favourites in the previous round 3/0 - Tim Vail the 2nd seed, so was clearly a force to be reckoned with, while Mustonen had a good battle with Hallamshire Head Coach Adam Turner, eventually taking down the local hero 3/1. In the end, the Finn's ability to absorb and counteract the pace that Bowden put into the ball and the game took its toll, with the ex Squash world ranked 33 player taking the 70 minute match 3/1 in an absolutely brilliant display of the physicality and variations that you can get in Racketball. Very well played to both of the guys! WE HOPE TO SEE YOU AGAIN AWARD:
The Finnish Contingent! Of course we want to see each and every competitior back again at our Series or Major events, but it was so great to see a group of players over from Finland again this year. They all were so incredibly friendly and entertaining to have involved in the tournament and I am certain that they made some lifelong UK Racketball community friends in their time over here. They have their first ever Finnish Racketball Open in Helsinki on the weekend of 23rd & 24th May 2026 and would love to see as many of our crew over there as possible, so please get it in the diary! (It is possible to fly out Friday and back Sunday night from England by the way...) Huge thanks to Petteri Repo for spreading the word out there and also helping to organise this new European event for next year. We hope to make it out there ourselves and return the favour in 2026... So that's it for the 2025 Majors! Series and Road to Selection rankings will be updated very soon so keep an eye out there. You can find all the pictures taken from the weekend on our Facebook album here: www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.1751813562432857&type=3 And also you can find some of the matches vidoed from across the weekend on the below Youtube Channels: www.youtube.com/@lawrenceogden2162 www.youtube.com/@Squash57 https://www.youtube.com/@UKRacketballGB A huge thank you to everyone that took part and who made it such a fun and social weekend of Racketball. We have a brilliant community behind the game and it makes each and every event just as special as the last. Also thank you to the Hallamshire and Fulwood Clubs for hosting us so welcomingly. Two brilliant venues and it always makes our lives so much easier when we have great courts and great clubs to run events out of! Finally, thanks to our amazing sponsors who without their support we would not have been able to build the prize fund to get such brilliant players involved at the top end of the Men's & Women's categories, nor would we have been able to give all the winners such a great array of prizes for battling through their categories.
