Next up in our Club and Session focus series is On The Court @50+ at Grantham Squash Club, run by the fantastic family coaching setup TruCoaching, led by Series regular and Lincolnshire Squash & Racketball staple Nigel Truman. In his own words...
''On The Court @50+ started in September this year at Grantham Squash Club and run by ourselves, TruCoaching…a family project aimed at spreading our love of racketball to others. For this particular group we wanted people over the age of 50 to find a place to learn a new skill or develop existing skills, to meet and socialise with other people and to enjoy some friendly racketball coaching and games. Everyone is in the same boat and learning new skills together, we were conscious that there would be different standards of players, some having never played before and some having years of experience but one thing that is common with players are injuries. Before the sessions started we asked if the club sports therapist would be interested in giving some advice, we also gained knowledge through our continual professional development as coaches and each week we see the participants sharing their own experiences with injuries and we work on prevention rather than cure, each player has their own individual goals with their fitness and racketball journey. Each week, On The Court @50+ sees different movement, mobility and racketball themes…nothing complicated just ideas that the participants can be involved with and develop. Our last session saw shoulder mobility on court using the side walls (wall angels and scarecrows) we then focused on the drop shot. It was wonderful to see the players working together by feeding the ball to each other and taking it in turns to play a drop shot. Many thanks to UKRacketball for their online coaching tips. The players decide if they want to finish the session with a full court game or a conditioning game, the last session saw a game of Egyptian 3/4 court which was fun and engaging. Some of the most rewarding moments as a coach was hearing two players who have never met each other before asking one another for a game, seeing a couple booking a court for themselves to practise racketball together, seeing a wonderful serve from a new player and the delight on their face, these are just a few of many examples. It was lovely to receive this from the sessions with Steve enjoying racketball at 76 years young. "Absolutely brilliant!! And a lot of fun and very relevant to the sport, even for a 'crumbly'. Steve. "The TruCoaching sessions are great. Really good fun, engaging and very informative. Highly recommend them, fantastic racketball related all round workouts." Jackie. Fantastic to see such a great approach to the game and engaging new players in it! Top work the TruCoaching crew.
