Nottingham Open Doubles Report

2019 marked the 25th anniversary of the Nottingham Open Doubles. There was real hope at Nottingham Squash Club that this would be a special event and on the day it did not disappoint. The standard was higher in the top grades than it has been previously and this lead to some fantastically competitive matches. It was the latest recorded finishing time of 23:15 with presentation and boat race concluding the day at midnight!
In the A Grade top seeds and defending champions Declan James and Lewis Walters overcame an early scare in the group stages having to save 3 match balls to defeat Ali Mutch and Michael Shean. In Group 2 the ¾ seeds Rob Downer and Niall Engerer were defeated early on by the Thame team Simon Martin and Nick Harbour. Groups C and D saw the top seeds all progressed through to the quarterfinals.
If the size and noise level of the crowd is anything to judge by the match of the day took place in the A Grade Quarter Finals. Simon Parke and Peter Marshall took an early lead against Mutch and Shean but could not sustain it. In a best of three lasting over an hour, it was the younger men that made it through defeating the veteran squash legends 2-1.

The A Grade semi finals proved quite straightforward with James and Walters making short work of Fuller and Bailey. Mutch and Shean recovered well from their tough quarters to defeat the Green brothers 2-0.
The final was the much-anticipated rematch of the earlier group game that almost saw Mutch and Shean defeat the defending champions James and Walters. However the last doubles tournament that James and Walters played in was the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. In the end it was experience that saw the local duo through. In a match finishing at 23:15 in front of a still packed balcony, James and Walters retained their title for the 4th year in a row.
In a testimony to the high standard of the Mixed grade both the two seed pairing of Matthew Broadberry and Ayesha Bhatti and ¾ seeds Paul and Sarah Broadberry failed to progress past the group stage. By the semi finals the only seeds left were the 5/8 duo from Lings Emily Westall and Cameron Bentley Chessum and the top seeds and defending champions Mari Taylor and Adam Turner from Trent University. In the first of the semi finals Westall and Bentley Chessum defeated Jack Dukes and Libby Corke. Taylor and Turner were pushed hard by up and coming Katie Wells and Rob Cunningham but overcame the challenge.

2019 was the third year in a row that Taylor and Turner had made the final of the Nottingham Open Doubles. It was the first time that Westall and Bentley Chessum had made it past the quarters. The Lings pair pushed hard but Taylor and Turner were in control from the start and in the end retained their title with a 2-0 win in the final.
The B, C and D Grades were all full 16 team draws with the E Grade a two box split with 4 teams in one and 5 in the other. In the B, C and D players had to win three group matches followed by a quarterfinal, semi final and final to be crowned champions.
Kalpesh Parshotam and Janak Kika from NSRC overcame all challengers to take the B Grade crown. In the C Grade two seeds Leon Gelderblom and Andy Hopwood defeated unseeded Notts Uni alumni Patrick Bointon and Matthew Blenkinsop.
Stefan Gwardzinski and Martin Rodgers had a 5 team group in the D Grade which meant that they had more matches than anyone else on the day. Despite an early defeat to Ria Kennerley and Saoirse O'Sullivan in the groups they came back strong beating the ¾ seeds from Metheringham, Daniel Carlile and James Karran in the final. The E Grade saw the closest final of the day with Nick Allen and Ian Hicks defeating Philip Bowler and Jason Rance 2-1.

The final award on the day went to Thame Racquets for victory in the boat race. Special mention to team captain Simon Martin, not the fastest on the squash court but when it comes to the boat race…

Draws and Schedule 28th January
Follow this link to access the draws and schedule. The schedule is across several pages so make sure that you scroll through - http://www.uk-racketball.com/notts-doubles-2019.html
The finishing time for the event would have been a lot earlier if it was not for the quarter finals but I have decided to keep them in for this year. By allowing the top two through to the next round the event stays “live” for almost everyone right up until the last matches.
Please note that sometimes you will have a few hours between matches. Make sure you plan appropriately.
Due to the nature of squash doubles there maybe times when courts are not running to time. If this is the case please don’t worry, we will get through all the matches. This is just a note to let you know that if you turn up expecting everything to run exactly to time all day you will be disappointed.
The following players are competing in multiple grades. If you have entered multiple grades you will have matches back to back. There is no way to avoid it but I have tried to avoid direct clashes on the schedule wherever possible. If anyone spots an issue please let me know.
Tom Bailey, Julie Peachey, Jason Varrie, Alex Whitehouse, Elaine Radcliffe, Ria Kennerley, Leon Gelderblom, Saoirse O’Sullivan, Andrew Hopwood, Aisling Guerzoni , Sheldon England, Mike Pinfold, Adam Turner, Peggy Crawford, Ollie Blanchard, Ayesha Bhatti, Matthew Broadberry , Jack Dukes, Libby Corke, Hayley Openshaw Blower, Sarah Broadberry, Laurence Green.

Entry list and seedings 25th January
As always this event is over subscribed and we have a waiting list. If anyone needs to withdraw please let me know as soon as you can so this place can be made available.
The entry list works on a first come first served basis. One the maximum number of entries has been taken players entering after this have been added to the reserve list.
Due to court limitations grades A, B, C and D have been limited to a 16 draw.
Squash Levels
For anyone who does not know how Squash Levels works follow this link, if you play local leagues quite a few of your results should be on. It could be interesting to see where the website rates you and your rivals.
https://www.squashlevels.com/players.php?home
Most graded tournaments have started to use Squash Levels to help with seeding. Not ever area of the UK is using Squash Levels on a regular basis so your level on Squash Levels does not always reliably represent your ability but it is getting close. 90% of players in the event have a squash level. For the 10% that don't if your partner has a level I have assumed that you are the same. If neither player in a team has a Squash Level I have assumed that your combined level is the average for the grade that you entered.
If a grade was over subscribed then the players with the lowest Squash Levels will be moved into the grade below. I have not moved players down by more than one grade even if their Squash Levels is lower than that of the top of the grade below.
Seedings for the grades have been based on Squash Levels. All seeds will be drawn. For example all 5/8 seeds have the same chance of being in a group with the no.1 seeds...
Obviously this system will not always work out fairly but I think it’s a far better system that the guess work I have had to do over the past few years.
I will keep this flexible so if anyone thinks that this needs to be changed just let me know. I will be doing the draws on Sunday so please let me know as soon as you can if you have any issues.
Draws and schedules will be out on Monday.
Saturday will be a busy day but hopefully a lot of fun!

The return of Peter Marshall and Simon Parke

Two squash legends are set to make their return to Nottingham Squash Club for the 25th anniversary of the Innes England Nottingham Open doubles. Ex World no.2 Peter Marshall and ex World no.3 Simon Parke will form a legendary squash doubles pairing and take on the young professionals in the A Grade.
Peter Marshall
With his unique double-handed playing style, Marshall finished runner-up to the great Pakistani player Jansher Khan at the World Open in 1994 and the British Open in 1995. When he reached the World No. 2 ranking behind Jansher in November 1994, many observers felt he seemed a strong candidate to displace the aging Pakistani champion as World No. 1. However, in 1995, Marshall was afflicted with glandular fever, the effects of which meant he was unable to play top-level squash for two years.
Marshall returned to the professional tour in 1997, re-claiming his place in the England squad which went on to win the World Team Squash Championship title in Malaysia. He broke back into the world's top-10 in 1999, and won his third British National Championship title in February 2000. He was protecting a remarkable record, having been unbeaten in that event since December 1989.
Simon Parke
Parke was part of the England team that won the 1995 Men’s World Team Squash Championships and 1997 Men’s World Team Squash Championships. He also won the US Open title in 1999 and won the British National Championships in 1998.
Parke reached a career-high world ranking of World No. 3 (Oct 2000).
