Hallamshire Open Report
For the third year in a row, the UKRB Series headed to one of the best squash and racketball clubs in the country, Hallamshire.
A Grade
Due to a limited number of A Grade entries, the A and B Grades merged, to form 3 groups before a winners group of 3 players to decide the overall winner. In the largest group, Group A, 1st seed Lee Sadler was victorious against Amilcar Malta and Tanya Ruff, however became unstuck against Andy Wood and Daniel Kirk. This set-up a group final between the two players, which saw Daniel Kirk come out on top in a very close encounter, securing his position in the winners group. With the withdrawal of Simon Jackson in group B, the group opened up and saw Over 60’s entrant, Jez Horrocks take full advantage and qualify for the winners group with wins over Tom Swinden and Rosie Connell. In group C, Portuguese entrant, Miguel Mascarenhas cruised his way to the winners group with his ferocious hitting.
The A Grade final was ultimately down to a nail-biting encounter between Miguel Mascarenhas and Daniel Kirk. This match displayed a lot of fierce rallies with some great flare and shots. At 1-1, Kirk was leading Miguel 8-3, before a thrilling comeback from the Portuguese player saw him take the game and then A Grade title!
Over 40’s
With withdrawals on the day from Richard Davies and Andy Wood, the over 40’s category opened up massively. A notable encounter between Paul Johnson and Nick Wall in group A, saw the unranked Wall come up against the national number 1, resulting in a 2-0 upset, as Wall secured his place in the final. Group B saw comfortable wins for Nottingham player, Karl Murray, setting up a final with local player, Wall. Nick Wall’s ball placement proved too much for Murray in the end, despite a closer 2nd game, Wall was the eventual victor, 2-0.

Over 50’s
The Over 50’s was the largest draw on the day and had some very high quality racketball. In group A, Patrick Osborn proved why he was the number 1 player in the country with 2-0 over all his opponents, despite a closer game with Andy Ruff. Group B was by far the most competitive and saw some great racketball matches going right down the wire. Russel Cox, of Redbridge, was the eventual winner, setting up a semi-final against Osborn. Group C was the smallest group and saw Jonathon Edwards get 2-0 wins over both Lee Sadler and Richard Wells. Group D was also a tight encounter, but eventually saw Michael Wardle of Surrey come out as the victor, despite a close 2-1 match with Mike English.
The semi-finals were contrasting, Osborn and Cox put on a lengthy display of good quality racketball, the Osborn narrowly edging it 2-1. The Wardle and Edwards match was a shorter encounter of fiery racketball, with Wardle setting up a final with Osborn. Unfortunately, a withdrawal from Wardle in the first game, meant that Patrick Osborn was crowned Over 50’s champion!

Over 60’s
The over 60’s was the smoothest grade of the day, with two groups of 5 and 4 players. Stephen Widdison overcame all opponents 2-0 in group A, including the 1 seed, Hans Bilson. It was a similar story in group B, as the A grade finalist, Jez Horrocks also overcame all opponents 2-0. The final was a good display, however the fast pace of Widdison took its toll on Horrocks, who was crowned the Over 60’s winner, winning 11/4 11/6.
Women’s
The women’s draw only had 3 entrants but was a very fair and competitive draw. 2015 winner, Nina Parker, was unable to retain her crown and lost out 2-1 to Tanya Ruff and 2-0 to Rosie Connell in both very close games. A thrilling match between Rosie and Tanya saw some great shots and ball placement, with Connell coming out on top, taking the match 2-1 an the Women’s title!
I’d like to thank everyone for your participation on the day and for your great attitudes, we hope to see you all back again next year. A special thank you to those of you who helped out with marking matches (you know who you are!).
Make sure you enter our next UKRB Series event, which will be the National Racketball Doubles at Leicester!

Introduction
Hallamshire Tennis and Squash Club is an obvious choice as a venue for a UK-Racketball Series Event. The Racketball section is one of the strongest if not the strongest in the country with plenty of group sessions running each week. The club runs a very successful racketball junior section on a Saturday morning, midweek women’s sessions and a very successful summer league.
Hallamshire is home to the Men’s England No. 1 and World No. 4 Nick Matthew. Players taking part in this year’s UK-Racketball event will have the chance to play on the Nick Matthew Championship Court.

Last year was only the second event we have run at Hallamshire. The Over 60s category saw Graham Greensall make the final yet again, but the title went to Ian Graham in a 2-1 battle.

Grades
It is important to remember that UK-Racketball Series events are designed to be inclusive. Although the A grade does attract the best racketball players in the country the events really are for players of all ages and abilities. We have never had a competitor who felt they were not good enough for an event when they took part.
A Grade – County, national or good club player
B Grade – Regular club player
Women’s – All ages and abilities, these events have a great range of players which makes for a fun
and competitive day.
Over 40’s – For players over the age of 40
Over 50’s - For players over the age of 50
Over 60’s – For players over the age of 60
Beginner – This is for players who have recently started racketball. Players who have previously
played squash to a high level and have now started playing racketball may be better off in the A or B grade. To maintain a fun atmosphere for this grade, only trophies will be awarded to the winners however there will also be a reduced entry fee of just £10.
If you are unsure which category to enter please feel free to contact Mark Fuller directly on 07846067505 or email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to advise you.
If entries to a category are not sufficient grades may be merged, however all participants will always be informed in advance and they will have a choice if they would still like to play, this has never happened in the last three years.
