Wakefield Open Report – Event 5 of the HEAD 2017 UK-Racketball Series

A Grade
A and B grades were both running for the first time at Wakefield so the top standard for the tournament was concentrated for the A in just one draw of 5 players.
Lee Sadler, last years Wakefield Over 50’s winner fought hard all day as he always does but was ultimately defeated by both local players Kasey Hall and Martin Humphrey. Although Hall overcame Humphrey in their match up both finished the event on 4 points each with Humprey managing to battle his way to points against both Hall and Davies.
The A grade was decided by a show down between two current National Champions. Both Jason Russel National Over 45’s Champion and Richard Davies National Over 40’s Champion were undefeated going into the final. It was a tough match and a clash of styles which is always interesting. Russel plays fast, hits hard and low and looks to batter through his opponent. Davies plays controlled, using height and time to control the pace of the game. The match didn’t disappoint, Russel took an early lead and commanding position in the first game only for Davies to claw his way back. Despite throwing everything at Davies in the end Russel began to run out of steam with the end of the second game seeing Davies firmly in control.

B Grade
Split into two even sized groups of 4
Matt Hart defeated Rosie Connell but did not have enough against Matt Morgan or Michael English. With the score 4 points each before their match it went right down to the wire in a 3 game match to decide the group. English is one of the most experienced campaigners of the UK-Racketball Series however and this saw him through and into another final!
Ever improving Paul Wilson headed up group 2 but despite a good win against John Lund and close match against Richard Cobb group winner Josephy Walton proved too strong. Walton went on to defeat both Cobb and Lund to secure his place in the final.
In a high quality B final it was English who came through as the victor and added another HEAD UK-Racketball Series title to his collection.

Over 40’s
The Over 40’s is always a popular grade at Wakefield with local Racketball legend Andy Wood always drumming up some good support for it. This year was no exception with players having to get through a group of 4 to make the final.
Group 1 was very competitive with Matt Morgan only just defeating Brendon Bennett who in turn was only just beaten by Darren Lee. The group was decided by a very high standard game between Richard Davies (current National Champion) and Darren Lee. Full credit to Lee who pushed Davies all the way and was only narrowly beaten 2-1. Not many players take a game from Davies so lets hope we see Lee at the Nationals in Nottingham in 2018.
In Group 2 Lee Walton defeated Richard Cobb and pushed Andy Wood hard but was eventually beaten 2-1. The group predictably came to a head with Wood and Wardle undefeated and eyeing up their place in the final. On this occasion Wardle had too much for the local man, booking his place in the final with a 2-0 win.
In the final Wardle started well. Moving the wall around and finding angles and space. As ever with Davies though the steady, consistent play began to take it’s toll on Wardle. Wardle threw everything at Davies but in the end gradually just ran out of gas. Davies takes his second title of the day!

The Over 50’s
Once again the Over 50’s was the largest group of the day with 3 groups of 4 competitors in each. UK-Racketball Series veteran Lee Sadler headed up group A and came through all three matches without dropping a game. Paul Halstead finished the group in 2nd place with 4 points after defeating Archi Lal in a close 2-1.
Group 2 saw a three way tie for first and a place in the final with Michael English, Matt Hart and Terry Horne all finishing on 4 points. With all three players defeating each other it went down to points aggregate to decide. Matt Hart had dropped one game to Michael Fleming so the group would be decided between English and Horne. On head to heads it was Horne that overcame English so he claimed the spot in the finals group. It could not have been much closer.

Group 3 was a lot more straightforward. Shiv Padary defeated John Lund 2-0 before being in tern beaten by Andy Ruff 2-0. This set up the group decider between Ruff (a National Racketball Doubles runner-up) and group top seed Michael Wardle. Wardle came through as the victor on this occasion and set up his second final of the day.
The finals group was a three way contest between three very experienced Racketball players. The Wakefield Open victor in 2016 Lee Sadler overcame Terry Horne who snuck through group 2 to set up a final with Michael Wardle. Both players are experienced on the UK-Racketball tour but on this occasion it was Wardle who made it through to take the title.

Over 60’s
It was another strong showing in the Over 60’s, to win you would need to come through a 4 man group and then the final!
Stephen Widdison made it through Group 1 unscathed. Chris Hawken overcame the challenge from John Alderson and Peter Marsden but Widdison is on a roll at the moment and he did not have enough to stop the Harrogate man.
Top seed in Group 2 Graham Greensall unfortunately had to withdraw ill on the day after just one match. Always a regular of the UK-Racketball Series it was a shame to see him struggling so much, fantastic effort to even make it through one game considering how ill he was. The withdrawal of Greensall however left the group wide open and Jez Horrocks took full advantage dispatching first Peter Seddon and then Stephen Utley 2-0.
This set up yet another match between Horrocks and Widdison and it did not disappoint. After a grueling half an hour of Racketball it was 10-5 match ball to Widdison only for Horrocks to fight back saving the first 4 match balls. In the end Widdison found the angle and claimed another UK-Racketball Series title to add to his collection!
A big thank you again to Andy Wood for helping to organise the event. The local Racketball enthusiasts really do help to make UK-Racketball a success and Andy is one of the best!

Draws Wednesday 6th September
If anyone has any problems or if I have missed anyone out then please contact me as soon as you can, either email me [email protected] or call me on my mobile 07846067505.
The tournament schedule will come out tomorrow. This will let you know the timing of all your matches. To give everyone a rough idea of timings we will be starting around 10:00 and I would have thought finishing around 17:00.
The tournament rules will be the same as always for this event and will be emailed out with the schedule. In a couple of grades groups are split into less than 4 which is the number required to give everyone in the group 3 matches. If this is the case we will have playoff matches, Please check the draw and schedule when it is released to see when these need to be played. Please make sure that you factor in the playoff matches as part of your days planning as not taking part in these might mean that your opponent has only had 2 matches.

Grades
It is important to remember that UK-Racketball Series events are designed to be inclusive. Although the A grade does attract the best racketball players in the country the events really are for players of all ages and abilities. We have never had a competitor who felt they were not good enough for an event when they took part.
A Grade – County, national or good club player
B Grade – Regular club player
Women’s – All ages and abilities, these events have a great range of players which makes for a fun and competitive day.
Over 40’s – For players over the age of 40
Over 50’s - For players over the age of 50
Over 60’s – For players over the age of 60
Beginner – This is for players who have recently started racketball. Players who have previously played squash to a high level and have now started playing racketball may be better off in the A or B grade. To maintain a fun atmosphere for this grade, only trophies will be awarded to the winners however there will also be a reduced entry fee of just £10.
If you are unsure which category to enter please feel free to contact Mark Fuller directly on 07846067505 or email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to advise you.
If entries to a category are not sufficient grades may be merged, however all participants will always be informed in advance and they will have a choice if they would still like to play, this has never happened in the last three years.
