Report
Over 60’s
Top seed in the Over 60’s Andy Mitchell played well throughout the competition. Fit and fast he played steady Racketball all day hitting few errors and making his opponents work for every point. Peter Fielding’s skills troubled Mitchell with pace variation and looking for tight soft angles to the front Fielding almost did enough to over come the top seed eventually losing 2-1.
Ed Smith took England No.12 Philip Clark close finishing off a brutal end to their second game and in the end being defeated narrowly 2-1. Smith did not have enough against Peter Seddon however being defeated 2-0 before Seddon went on to also defeat Fielding.
Arguably the best game of the day was between Phillip Clark and Andy Mitchell. It was a great contest of conflicting styles with Clarke looking to take the ball in short at every opportunity and Mitchell pushing deep and staying steady. In the end the consistent play of Mitchell was too much with the match finishing 2-1 in favor of the England No.1 Mitchell.

Over 50’s
It was another strong entry in the Over 50’s with 10 players split across two groups meaning all players had 4 matches in the groups before it even came down to the finals.
Both groups came right down to the wire with the top two players in both winning all matches. Lee Sadler against Terry Horne was a great game in group A with momentum going first one way and then another. In the end the experience of Sadler saw him through and into the final.
The decider in Group B was also close with both games being close until right at the end. Stephen Widdison was the stronger finisher on this occasion against Mike English taking both games 11/7, 11/7.
The much-anticipated final between the top two ranked players on the day started well for Sadler and he didn’t look back. At the beginning of the first Sadler hit accurately and took an early lead. Throughout the match he didn’t let up, claiming his second UK-Racketball Over 50’s title.

Over 40’s
The Over 40’s turned out to be one of the most hotly contested championships of the day. Mark Bradley defeated Chad Chadwick 2-0 but the two local guys failed to make an impact against the top three of which all were ranked in the top 20 in England. To decide the group it was a competition between Paul Johnson (1), Andy Wood (16) and Ady Proctor (13). Fortunately for Johnson the opening match between Proctor and Wood was brutal. Both players move the ball well and look to apply pace, which always makes it hard for their opponents especially in a match like this one. In the end Wood was victorious but as expected the match took its toll when he confronted Johnson.
Full credit to Johnson who played great Racketball all day moving the ball well and making very few errors. That’s two titles now for Johnson!
A Grade
Local man Andy Wood defeated UK-Racketball Series regular Gavin Burton early on but did not have enough to overcome Neil Baldwin!
In group B the highest ranked player on the day Kasey Hall defeated Matt Morgan and Lee Sadler to set up a group decider against Mike English. The clash between Hall and English was brutal right from the start with both players engaging long attritional rallies. In the end it was Hall who triumphed 2-1 making it into the Finals group.
Mark Burnley who is currently ranked 21 in England defeated first Series regular Simon Jackson and then local man Carl Ramsdan to claim Group C.
The Finals group was always going to be close with three strong players making it through. Neil Baldwin first dispatched Kasey Hall in another tough encounter for Halls legs. Hall then went straight on again but did not have enough to overcome Burney, the fact that he had played two of the toughest matches of the day in the space of a few hours might have explained it!
Halls defeat set up a final between Baldwin and Burnley. Despite Burnley putting everything into it he did not have enough to overcome the steady controlled Racketball from Baldwin and in the end was defeated 2-0. This was Baldwin’s first title in the open age group, adding to the two he has previously taken in the Over 40’s.
The next event in the Series is down in Chichester. This will be the 6th year that we have run the Chichester Racketball Open and entries are already looking good. Follow this link for more information - http://www.uk-racketball.com/chichester---29th-oct.html

Grades
It is important to remember that UK-Racketball Series events are designed to be inclusive. Although the A grade does attract the best racketball players in the country the events really are for players of all ages and abilities. We have never had a competitor who felt they were not good enough for an event when they took part.
A Grade – County, national or good club player
B Grade – Regular club player
Women’s – All ages and abilities, these events have a great range of players which makes for a fun and competitive day.
Over 40’s – For players over the age of 40
Over 50’s - For players over the age of 50
Over 60’s – For players over the age of 60
Beginner – This is for players who have recently started racketball. Players who have previously played squash to a high level and have now started playing racketball may be better off in the A or B grade. To maintain a fun atmosphere for this grade, only trophies will be awarded to the winners however there will also be a reduced entry fee of just £10.
If you are unsure which category to enter please feel free to contact Mark Fuller directly on 07846067505 or email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to advise you.
If entries to a category are not sufficient grades may be merged, however all participants will always be informed in advance and they will have a choice if they would still like to play, this has never happened in the last three years.
