BLUEBELL WOOD BRITISH RACKETBALL OPEN - report and results
The Bluebell Wood British Racketball Open was new to the UK-Racketball 2021 calendar, and it certainly didn’t disappoint! The tournament saw some 150 entrants representing 66 clubs from England, Scotland, Jersey, Cornwall, and Portugal, with the youngest being 13 and the oldest player 78!
This event could not take place without the support of sponsors The Templand Group, financially supporting the tournament and further promoting the charity Bluebell Wood. Bluebell Wood provides hospice care to children and young adults with serious illnesses, making the lives of these patients as fulfilling and enjoyable as possible during such tough times for families relying almost entirely on public support to do so.

The Bluebell Wood British Racketball Open saw the return of many familiar faces to the UK Racketball Series, as well as some famous newcomers looking to upset the established order. After a strong performance in August, Nationals Champion Amber Marshall was second seed in a draw packed with talent. With a strong performance in round one, Marshall looked set to continue her form into the British Open, but a semi-final clash with 3/4 seed Fiona Moverly ended her hopes of doing the double. Moverly went on to contest the title with number one seed Sarah-Jane Perry, who prevailed 3/2 in a 57-minute final.
In the men’s open, 10-time National Champion Tim Vail headed a draw stacked with talent, including 2021 Nationals finalist Luke Bishop and none other than 3-time World Squash Champion and 10-time National Squash Champion, Nick Matthew. The first round saw most of the seeds making it through, with Billy Jones upsetting 5/8 seed Hamish Falconer in 3 tight games and Alexis Smith, another 5/8 seed, withdrawing due to a hamstring injury.

The semi-finals saw Tim face a strong challenge from Nick Mulvey, the latter coming back from 5/11 in the first game to take the second by a convincing 11/3 margin. With the match finely poised, Tim drew on his experience to close out the next two 11/7, 11/5 to reach yet another final in the UK Racketball series. In the second semi-final, Hallamshire hero Nick Matthew took on one of the form players of the series, Luke Bishop. Nick raced out the blocks to take the first 11/6, before overcoming a strong challenge from Luke in the second to take a tight 14/12. The shift in momentum was a signal of what was to come, however, as Luke used the crowd support to take the third 11/9 and send the match to a decider with a big statement - winning 11/2 in the fourth. The final game swung back and forth, before Nick eventually closed out 11/8, winning 3/2 and setting up a final with Tim.
Sunday’s final was a tense affair between the top 2 seeds. Tim took the first 11/8, which was followed by a huge second game with both players having opportunities to close it out. Tim eventually took it 13/11, which would prove crucial in an already tight match. Nick got on the board in the third, taking it 11/8, before Tim closed out the 68-minute match 11/6 in the fourth to take home the trophy for the inaugural edition of the British Racketball Open.
‘I’m very privileged to have won the maiden British Open title. To beat Nick at his home club was never going to be easy. The gallery was full to the brim and I hope everyone enjoyed such an exciting match. The club and Mark put on a fantastic tournament and I hope to be back for many more’ - Tim Vail, Bluebell Wood British Racketball Open Champion 2021.

We had strong entries across all age groups and grades, and once again the camaraderie within the racketball community was evident throughout. We’ve picked out some of the highlights below.
The biggest draws on the day were the O55s and O60s. The O55s final was won by local legend Murray Scott, hitting some amazing kills to take it 11/6 in the fifth against 1 seed Patrick Osbourne. The O60s featured another marathon final, Chris Davey winning 3/1 against 1 seed Mike Phillips in a match which featured 3 tie-breaks. Chris Morris continued the theme of tight finals, the number 1 seed defeating Robert Hambrook 11/8 in the fifth. David Gouldby took the O45s title, beating the 1 seed Nicholas Staunton 11/7 in the fifth, while the O65s final saw a grudge-match between two South-West based players, Andrew Mitchell and Graham Holmes. 1 seed Mitchell eventually took the title, with another fifth-game win. The O70s final saw the 2019 series champion, Ian Graham, continue his run of good form to take the title without dropping a game.
In the doubles, Tom Phipps and David Herron took home the men’s title while Fiona Moverly and Paul Norton won the mixed category - the Hull pair dropping just one game during a highly competitive tournament with a fantastic atmosphere. In the Women’s O55s, Lesley Sturgess won some close matches on her way to the title, with strong performances from all competitors making for another tight draw.
The first of what we hope will be many British Racketball Opens was a huge success, thanks in no small part to the excellent spirit of everyone involved and fiercely contested matches throughout the tournament. We hope to see you all again next year, as Racketball continues to go from strength to strength in the UK.

You must be eligible to play in the event that you enter. The cut off date for age groups is the weekend of the competition. For example you must be 35 years old or older on 1st day of the competition to be eligible to play in the Over 35’s.
You can play in more than one grade but not more than two. If you do decide to play in two grades be aware that due to the infinite combination of different grade options the schedule will not be based around multiple grades. It is impossible to keep all players participating in multiple grades happy. Some of the players love have a break between matches, others like to have them back to back so that they don't get cold and then have to start again. Some players always want a much bigger break and get some food in the middle. Please be aware that playing in two grades might result in back to back matches or in you only having two hours between matches and not enough time to get proper food. If you decide to participate in two grades you need to be aware that you might have four matches in a day.
If you are unsure which category to enter please feel free to contact Mark Fuller directly on 07846067505 or email us at [email protected] and we will be happy to advise you.
Plate Competitions
We will run a plate competition for all categories. You need to inform the tournament organiser before the event starts if you do not wise to play in the plate. This will need to be done before the draws are done. At the latest straight after the event has closed on the 2nd of October.

Referees
In the UK-Racketball Series all matches are refereed by the player who won the previous match on that court. The feedback on the Series events is that this works really well and therefore the same format will take place in The National Championships.
WINNERS WILL REFEREE THE NEXT MATCH ON THE COURT THEY HAVE JUST PLAYED ON.
If you are playing in multiple grades and have another match following on you will need to find someone who can referee for you. The best thing to do is to explain to your opponent the situation and see if he can help.
If you are unable to referee for any reason and are unable to find someone to help you please contact the desk as soon as you can.
This event will run well with you corporation.

Dunlop Black Balls
The Dunlop double dot ball will be used for all grades. The feedback in the past has been very positive both for the Squash57 and Racketball Nationals. The Racketball ball is still a contentious issue in the UK with many different areas using different balls however the Dunlop Ball is quite a middle of the road ball so although it might not be ideal for everyone we feel that this is the best ball overall for the event.

Bluebell Wood who are we?
Your support helps us care for children and young adults whose lives are sadly just too short, both in their own homes and at our hospice in North Anston.
We believe that every family deserves to make magical memories with their child, whether they have years, months, weeks or days together.
Bluebell Wood is a home from home for families facing the toughest of times, with a comfy lounge and beautiful gardens. We’re always cooking up mouth-watering meals and tasty treats in the kitchen for families. There’s also plenty of fun activities for children to try, including soft play, arts and crafts, music therapy and much more.
While they’re staying with us, children have one of our eight bedrooms. If their family is staying too, then parents have their own room.
Every day, we need to raise £13,325 to keep our doors open, and only around 9% of our funding is from the government. Everything else is paid for by the wonderful work that you do; whether you run, bake or even Brave the Shave.
We received an overall rating of 'Good' in our most recent inspection undertaken by the Care Quality Commission (CQC); and are proud that we received a rating of 'Outstanding' for being a caring service. You can read our full CQC inspection report here.
