Wycombe Racketball Open Report
Wycombe Racketball open was the last event of the 2015 UK Racketball series. Once again the tournament was sold out with 60 entries, with the largest grade on the day being the over 50s with 16 players.
Grade A
It was quite an open A grade on the day, with Luke Bishop England number 5 and late withdrawal from Dan Soar England number 7, meaning the grade was more open than any UK Racketball event this year.
In group A Adam Pyne and Ross Proudfoot both claimed 4 points, Adam Pyne defeating both Mike Fleming and Proudfoot, with Proudfoot taking a game off both Luke Bishop and Adam Pyne to draw in second place. Luke Bishop made it through to yet another final this year with some flamboyant Racketball.
Group B saw the late withdrawal of Dan Soar leaving the tournament very much open and the scores reflected this with all the games being tight. Highest ranked player Adam Grilli started well defeating Portuguese Manuel Costa, who got to the final of the over 50s, and then claiming a game off Jason Russell. Jason Russell finished in close second with 6 points having only been defeated by Angus Bell who came through the group as the winner.
In the final the results went to seeding with Luke Bishop coming through as the victor and taking his first UK Racketball title of the year.
Grade B
Group A was the biggest of the two groups with 5 players, meaning 4 matches had to be won to go through to the final. On the day it was Ryan Loska who came through as the group winner, taking all his matches 2-0 overcoming Roger Cliffe, Tim Melvin, Andy Metcalf and higher ranked Lee Sadler.
In group B Wayne Scott went through to the final after defeating Richard Harvey, Rob Wallace and Stephen Hill 2-0.
The final proved too much for Wayne Scott as he was defeated 2-0 by Loska who took yet another UK Racketball series title.
Over 40s
This group saw Michael Wardle return to form coming through group A as the winner, with UK Racketball series veteran Mark Thornley coming through in group.
The final was very close with Thornley showing his experience and accurate hitting to take the match and the title 2-1.
Over 50s
In group A, Patrick Osborn once again came through without dropping a game, with Athar Ahmad coming second place defeating highly ranked Mike Fleming. In group B, once again the top seed Paul Fennell who came through, although he was pushed hard by Martin Nash, defeating him 2-1 to win the group by 1 point.
For group C it was Lee Sadler who came through winning all three matches without dropping a game with Akhtar Khokhar coming in second place defeating both Stephen Hill and John Purdon.
In group D, a late withdrawal from Mike English meant it was a 3 man group. Top seed Mark Banfield defeated Chris Popham, but in turn was defeated by Portuguese played Manuel Costa who went on to win the group.
In the Semi-finals Patrick Osborn overcame Paul Fennell with Manuel Costa once again overcome a higher seeded and ranked player, Lee Saddler 2-0.
The final however proved one step to far for Costa with experienced Racketball player and England Number 2 Patrick Osborn claiming yet another UK Racketball series title this year.
Over 60s
Once again this group saw a great entry with 13 players split into two groups of 4 and a group of 5.
Group A saw England number 3 Andy Mitchell come through winning all his matches, despite being pushed hard by Robert Thomas.
In group B Graham Greensall once again claimed a spot in the finals, but he was almost defeated first by Philip Clarke and then by Lou Needle overcoming both 2-1 in tough matches.
Group C was the biggest group of the day with 5 players, meaning 4 matches had to be won just to see yourself through to the final group. The only unseeded player in the group was Graham Bonnett and he made it through to the final defeating David Mudge, ranked 5, Gary Turner, ranked 12, Chris Hawken, ranked 13 and Robin Soar, ranked 15.
In the winners group, England number 3 Andy Mitchell, once again claimed a UK Racketball series title, defeating both Graham Greensall and the runner up on the day, Graham Bonnett.
Grade A

Wycombe Squash and Racketball Club is hosting the ninth and final event in the 2015 UK-Racketball Series on 28th November. Having held an event here for the past 3 years, we are anticipating high demand and with this being the final event of the year, do not delay in securing your entry as soon as possible!
Since its introduction in 2012, the Wycombe Racketball Open has been a great success each year and has attracted some top class racketball players.

Grades
It is important to remember that UK-Racketball Series events are designed to be inclusive. Although the A grade does attract the best racketball players in the country the events really are for players of all ages and abilities. We have never had a competitor who felt they were not good enough for an event in which they have taken part.
A Grade – County, national or good club player
B Grade – Regular club player
Women’s – All ages and abilities, these events have a great range of players which makes for a fun and competitive day.
Over 40’s – For players over the age of 40
Over 50’s - For players over the age of 50
Over 60’s – For players over the age of 60
Beginner – This is for players who have recently started racketball. Players who have previously played squash to a high level and have now started playing racketball may be better off in the A or B grade. To maintain a fun atmosphere for this grade, only trophies will be awarded to the winners however there will also be a reduced entry fee of just £10.

Club Facilities
The club itself boasts five championship courts, a comfortable lounge and bar run by the members, for the members.
Last year, food was very well priced and served throughout the day; with bacon rolls for breakfast, followed by sandwiches and meals from lunchtime onwards. The feedback from competitors last year was that the staff were friendly and helpful all day long, which certainly helped to make the day so successful and enjoyable for all competitors.
There is also are large car park, making travelling by car easy.
