WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR . . . Series Finals - National Doubles and East midland Open 2023 Singles ROUND UP!
Our 2023 Karakal UK Racketball Series was topped off by a fantastic day of singles and doubles action at the lovely Grantham Squash Club in Lincolnshire on a foggy and snowy Saturday 2nd December. (Great Racketball weather!)
It was a busy day, what with a full Singles Series event running alongside a far busier than usual Doubles tournament (the National Doubles being a Major ranking event with multiple age categories.) There were some fantastic battles throughout the day and the Series rankings final placings came down to the very last match of the tournament! We couldn't have asked for a tighter, more entertaining end to a fantastic Series of matches.
The full results can be found on Sporty HQ HERE
Now, leading on to our top of the table finishers!
Coming down to the tightest of margins, Alexis Smith from Dorset pipped Paul Norton of Yorkshire to the 2023 Series title by the finest of marging. Just 3,560 points to 3,475, the final Doubles match of the National Doubles being the deciding factor! Both players have been incredibly consistent across the Serfies, both being O40s and Doubles specialists, and have regularly battled it out on court. Huge congratulations to Alexis for his persistence across the year and he gets free 2024 Series membership alongside a host of Karakal and Jaguar Nutrition prizes as his reward! Commiserations to Paul for just missing out. He does however come away with a new reward - the Doubles MVP (Most Valuable Player) prize for the most Doubles category wins across the Series!
Sitting just below the two in 3rd place was O70s top dog Graham Greensall of Warwickshire, who himself has been a fantastic competitor all the way through, and woiuld have been himself a well deserved winner but for the Doubles expertise of Norton & Smith. We then had (to round out the top 8):
4: Patrick Osborn
5: John Cordeaux
6: Amber Marshall
7: Mike Harris
8: Colin Griggs
Very well done to everyone who finished in the prize positions, we will be in touch to sort out your fantastic Karakal and Jaguar Nutrition sponsored prizes ASAP. You can see the full rankings on Sporty HQ below:
2023 Series Rankings
We are looking forward to 2024 already! After the New Year we have the first event - the Scottish Open in Glasgow on 27th January, and then roll on monthly (or twice monthly sometimes) from there.
Thank you to everyone who took part in our Series, from 12 year olds to 85 year olds we had a brilliantly varied selection of entrants, over 800 in total across all our events. A really great demonstration of how inclusive and fun to participate in the sport is. Some close friends are made and some exciting rivalries are discovered and we can't wait to explore it all more going forward.

The final event of the 2022 UK-Racketball Series took place in Nottingham on Saturday the 3rd of December and this year the Series Finals and National Doubles was our 100th UK Racketball event!
This UK Racketball event didn't disappoint, with some brilliant battles across all the Categories and the Doubles. There were upsets, first ever doubles game wins for some pairs and sore bodies all round. Finished off by celebratory cookies, pizza and beers at our post event player's party!
Starting off with the National Doubles event, there were some really great matches throughout the day. The top 2 seeds in the Open event Luke Bishop and Amber Marshall, and Paul Norton and Craig Chappell ended up meeting twice in tournament, and both matches did not disappoint. Both matches went right down to the wire, with some of the best attacking Doubles Racketball we have seen yet in our events.
In the end Norton and Chappell managed to battle through both times 2 games to 1, with the Final being 11/9 in the 3rd.
The Mixed event did not disappoint either, with three really strong pairings taking part. Mixed Doubles experts Patrick Osborn and Zoe Fennell were always going to take some beating, and they proved this as they pushed other event favourites Marshall and Bishop right the way through a 5 set thriller. The left/right hand combination providing some brilliant variations of play.
Bishop and Marshall are no doubles slouches though, and having played together for a number of years now know each other's game patterns really well. They managed to stay strong enough throughout to see the other pair off 11/8 in the 5th game in another really high quality encounter.
Both of the above matches were streamed live and the video can be found on our UK Racketball Facebook page here: https://fb.watch/heNxwB8jDD/
The first Open Norton/Chappell vs Bishop/Marshall match starts off at 2hrs 44 mins in and the Mixed Osborn/Fennell vs Bishop/Marshall match starts at 6hrs 15 mins in.
The other Doubles categories had some really entertaining games too, notably in the O60's where Fielding/Clarke managed to win their first ever game as a Doubles pairing, with none other than a perfect corkscrew boast winner at game point from Fielding to seal it!
Full list of the Doubles event winners below:
Open: Norton / Chappell, RUP Bishop / Marshall
Mixed: Bishop / Marshall, RUP Osborn / Fennell
O40s: Loska / Osborn, RUP Smith / Beel
O50s: Dennis / Evans, RUP Wase / Dodds

(The moment of corkscrew victory for Fielding/Clarke captured on camera above!)
